I have a question about brake work on my car?

I know I need brake pads and rotors on my car, that is a guarantee. However, the mechanic told me there is a leak in the brake lines, but he can't find where the leak is coming from. I am not a mechanic, but shouldn't a descent mechanic be able to tell me where it's coming from? He says "Because I don't know where the leak is coming from, I am going to say that ALL the brake lines should be changed." Now, please take this into account: I filled up my brake fluid the other day and drove the car for about an hour, braking very lightly of course, and the brake fluid DID NOT decrease. Should the fluid level at least go down a little? There is also no pressure difference when I apply the brakes, I am using the same pressure as before I needed the pads and rotors. There is no leaking under the car either. Also, he says I need a tie rod because one is bent, but I have not hit any curbs or big potholes or anything. The car drives straight and doesn't steer off or anything so I found that weird for him to say. It certainly doesn't need a wheel alignment. I guess the MAIN QUESTION I have is....If I got only the pads and rotors replaced, what further damage can I cause? Also, will a mechanic be willing to do ONLY the pads and rotors even if he THINKS the brake lines need to be changed? Or will he refuse all the work? The car is a 2000 Chevrolet Malibu. @ Frank: Thanks for your input! He had the car on the hoist and he brought me over and showed me some fluid on the lines, but said he could NOT find the leak. For all I know that could be any kind of fluid. He said it was brake fluid, but how would I know? lol I don't know much about cars!

Is this Toyota Camry a good deal?

I found this 1999 Toyota Camry with only 87,000 miles on it. The car is in great shape (I went to test drive it) and the guy only wants 5,000 dollars for it. Is it a good deal? Are Camry's reliable? Should I keep looking? P.S. I don't want to hear people saying I should buy an american car blah blah blah. My Chevrolet Malibu was the worst car I owned. Serious answers.

quartiles and standard deviation in stats?

In its Fuel Economy Guide for 2008 model vehicles, the Environmental Protection Agency gives data on 1152 vehicles. There are a number of outliers, mainly vehicles with very poor gas mileage. If we ignore the outliers, however, the combined city and highway gas mileage of the other 1120 or so vehicles is approximately Normal with mean 18.7 miles per gallon (mpg) and standard deviation 4.3 mpg. The 2008 Chevrolet Malibu with a four-cylinder engine has combined gas mileage 25 mpg. What percent of all vehicles have worse gas mileage than the Malibu? How high must a 2008 vehicle's gas mileage be in order to fall in the top 5% of all vehicles? (The distribution omits a few high outliers, mainly hybrid gas-electric vehicles.) The quartiles of any distribution are the values with cumulative proportions 0.25 and 0.75. They span the middle half of the distribution. What are the quartiles of the distribution of gas mileage? Gas mileage of the first quartile: Gas mileage of the third quartile: The quintiles of any distribution are the values with cumulative proportions 0.20, 0.40, 0.60, and 0.80. What are the quintiles of the distribution of gas mileage? Gas mileage of 0.20 of the distribution: Gas mileage of 0.40 of the distribution: Gas mileage of 0.60 of the distribution: Gas mileage of 0.80 of the distribution:

1997 Chevrolet Malibu W/ Bad MPG?

I've figured it up that my car is gettin about 15 mpg instead of the 20-25 mpg the experts say it should get. Already had to replace spark plugs and starter. Air Filter looks good. Any idea where to start to look next?
