Need good advice for my situation. Replacing the battery and alternator?

Hi, so I have a 2001 chrysler sebring 2.7 dohc. I had an incident where my battery light came on going to work; it was then followed by dimming lights and transmission failure. First thing I figure is its my alternator, but I replaced it 6 months ago. It took about 5 boosts across the city to make her home. My roommate who has worked on cars all his life told me to replace both the alternator and the battery you trashed it boosting it that much. When I went in to get the alternator they told me your battery might be fine let us charge it and see if it holds. The tests came back fine at the store so I didn't buy a battery. I put in the new alternator but it wouldn't charge the battery and the battery light came on right away which my roommate also told me wouldn't have happened if your battery was fully charged. Is my best solution to this to buying a new battery tomorrow and put it in, start the car, and have the volts tested. If it reads under 14 volts I stop it and get my newly warrented alternator and put it in and then test again?

130 million profit this year at Chrysler? I don't know if its true? Last time I saw their stock it was down by half. Plus workers are losing their jobs again. And alot of their cars were recalled. And bailing them BILLIONS, and them making Millions don't sound successful. Even GE CORP, who was about to go bankrupt until Obama came along, made 14 BILLION in profits- probably because Obama and his gang destroyed alot of GE's competition.
