Why is small truck gas mileage worse now than 20 yrs ago?

My 1991 basic 4-cylinder Nissan PU with over 200,000 miles on it still gets 22 city/28 highway. If 21-yr old technology could do that, why isn't there a small truck today that can get well over 30 mpg?

I have a 06' nissan xterra, i got new Phoenix gold door speakers, and a pioneer touch screen head unit. im looking into buying an amplifier for the door speakers but have no idea what i need. how many channels should it be? how many watts, and how much it would probably cost me. Also im going to get 2 sub woofers and tweeters. should i get a whole new amp for the subs? could i run the tweeters and door speakers off one amp? also if you could name some good brands. thanks

Nissan Maxima, car makes a crank/groan noise when turn, right wheel?

When I turn the wheel of the car, around the right tire, car makes that crank/groan noise. Another note might be useful is that I had my starter changed, before that it never made that noise until after that starter was changed. What could this be and how much am I looking at? Nissan Maxima 2000.

1989 FJ62 or 94 Suburban k1500 with a 350 or 92 4runner sr5?

I'm trading my 2x nissan pick up and I have those 3 choices for even trades. The fj has 284000 miles and the other 2 about 165000 all are auto. I'm goingto be using the vehicle for taking my kid to and from school everyday and offroad outings once or twice a month. They all appear to be in pretty even condition. So for those purposes, which do you think I should trade for? Which will be the cheapest to maintain and give me the least trouble and the be the best vehicle for a slowly but surely project into becoming restored to as close to as new condition as possible while still being usable during the 5 year process? What do you mean " how much"? I'm making an even trade.

noise when i press the gas pedal?

1997 Nissan Altima in KOEO, and while pressing the gas pedal, there is a buzzing sound coming from the engine bay. i've never experienced that before. its only while the gas pedal is pushed/throttle position at WOT by hand. as soon as i let up, the sound goes away. also, fwiw, the engine doesnt turn over.
